Always Onboard With Sustainability
The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality’s (ADEQ) Voluntary Environmental Stewardship Program (VESP) recognizes Arizona businesses and organizations for their outstanding and ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability and protection. The program awards incentives to members of the ADEQ regulated community who have an excellent compliance history and go beyond what is legally required to protect public health and the environment.
We are proud to announce that the Grand Canyon Railway is a recipient of a Bronze Level VESP award!
Megan Mattioli, Sustainability Manager at the Grand Canyon Railway, accepted the award on behalf of the location. Megan has worked with the ADEQ her entire career and says she is honored that the Railway is receiving a VESP award.
“I am extremely proud of the environmental and sustainability programs we have in place at the Grand Canyon Railway. Our historic steam locomotives are fueled by waste vegetable oil and most of the lubricants used in our locomotives are biodegradable. We harvest stormwater for use in the steam locomotive boilers and repurpose whatever we can—benches throughout the property are made from old train wheels! Our amazing team makes all of this a success!” – Megan Mattioli
Megan and the team at the Grand Canyon Railway met the ADEQ’s requirement for having no environmental violations within the last three years and have clearly gone above and beyond to protect and preserve the environment. Congratulations, Grand Canyon Railway! Your innovation and dedication are inspiring!
